Q&A

Below is a list of questions and answers that I thought you may have about the tour.  I hope that you find them helpful. Simply click on any question to reveal the drop down answer below.

The Safari option will truly give you an authentic Safari experience on the Maasai Mara in a place and time when the Wildebeest are usually passing through.  You’ll also see Nairobi, Lake Nakuru, Lake Victoria in addition to many other classic wildlife photographic opportunities.  Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.  But, if we don’t see wildlife, I’ll eat my shorts!

In a word, yes… for most people.  The gorilla family that we’ll visit on this day are used to people and are more relaxed.  This is why we’re allowed to spend 4 hours with them.  The shorter gorilla treks only get to spend one (1) hour with a gorilla family are just starting to be introduced to humans.  Those gorillas can be a little shy sometimes making it harder to get up close and personal with them.

Yes, you may.  You may substitute the Golden Monkey experience in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the visit to the Batwa Village for another day with the Gorillas.  There is an additional change for this to cover the permits.  This option is only available if booked in advance.  You may read the details in the Addon Excursions page.

This option must be booked at least one month in advance for us to arrange for the additional gorilla permit(s).  This option is not refundable or transferable.  All sales are final.

It can take as little as 30 minutes or up to 2 hours to hike to the gorillas.  The full time park Gorilla guides know where the gorillas are on the day we visit and they will lead us to them.  We will have to hike on established mountain trails to reach the gorillas.  Our timer for our 4 hours session with the gorillas starts when we first see them and does not include the hiking time.

The tented camps consist of firm canvas walled tents erected onto wooden floors.  They are fully furnished inside with proper beds, tables, and chairs.  The bathrooms have toilets, bathtubs and showers.  The equivalent North American experience would be called “Glamping.”

The “tents” themselves are similar to the canvas walled cabins that you’ll find in Curry Village in Yosemite National Park in California or in the O-Ten-Tik campsites that you’ll find in Canada’s larger National Parks.  The tented Camp where we’ll be staying while exploring the Maasai Mara National Reserve is pretty lux compared to what most people think about when they image what ‘camping on the savanna’ will be like.  Here is the link to Enkorok Camp where we’ll be staying during our time there.

In a word, “Authentic!”

You’ll feel close to the savannah as the Sun goes down and all the day pass visitors return to their guest houses for the night.  It will feel like we have the whole place to ourselves, except for lions and elephants vocalizing off in the distance!  Imagine that ‘once in a lifetime experience’ of having the lions roaring off in the distance as you drift off to sleep.  This is THE REAL AFRICA!

The best flights to arrive in Nairobi usually fly through Amsterdam.  Consider an overnight in Amsterdam and go sight seeing there for a day!

You’ll never forget how awesome this tour was afterwards.   You’ll have these memories forever.  At least, that’s what these guys told me.
